In addition to basic research and a variety of research cooperations with industrial partners, the PZH also offers practical teaching on an equal footing. About 800 mechanical engineering students attend lectures, more than 500 are already actively involved in research projects as student employees. Since October 2019 with the Institute of Plastics and Circular Economy there are now eight institutes that have joined forces in the PZH to represent all aspects of production technology in research and teaching. They are part of the Faculty and Campus of Mechanical Engineering with a total of 20 institutes. The directors of the PZH institutes form the board of the PZH; the task of speaking for the board changes annually. In 2019, Professor Annika Raatz is the spokesperson of the board. TEWISS GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leibniz University, is also located at the PZH.
